Mike and Rivers and Rivers (Rivers - Glaucoma and Cataracts), Other pets are Sandy, Lakota and Ice - Mike Dillingham and Rivers, Sandy, Lakota and Ice. While Sandy is my 10-year-old female yellow Lab, Rivers is my "adopted" blind buddy and Lakota is just a big shy dog that also adopted me. Ice is the new addition, being only 3 months, old and.
Since I am very hard of hearing, people have joked that Rivers is my "Hearing Aid dog and I am his Seeing Eye human." Rivers had his diseased eyes removed and artificial ones put in on 8/23/2000 thanks to the efforts of IMOM. INC and the Blind Dog fund.
Dr. Jim Gaarder performed the operation that result with Rivers becoming pain free.
The Blind Dog E-group has provided a lot of great information in helping me help Rivers. It has been suggested that I write a children’s book regarding Rivers and his adventures. I hope that I will be able to do that.
Rivers and Lakota moved in us at out new home in May 2001 while Ice joined the crew in August 2001.

Click here to go back to map Holly's Mom, Donna and Holly (Anafalectic Shock as a pup), Other pets are Cockers: Amy, Chewey, Dakota, Max; Collies: Maggie, Tori - Holly is 4 and in the last 6 weeks has suddenly gone blind from nuclear cataracts. Her family has no genetic blindness and she's not diabetic. I have no money for opthamologist, but from my own research have found that an interuption in normal growth at an early age can spawn sudden cataracts. She is half the size of her siblings; the size of a 3 month old puppy. I almost lost her to thousands of fire ant bites and believe this growth stunt is the cause. She's adjusting better than me, and her family is taking up a lot of time cleaning her face and ears a lot. We are learning taps, snaps and claps. She just gets embarrassed when she runs into the wall or misses her doggie door. She has become more of a momma's baby now whereas she used to terrorize the big dogs. Euthenasia never crossed my mind until others started telling me it was cruel to keep her. I became disabled 6 years ago; they've never abandoned me and I won't abandon them!, Mobile

Kathleen Phillips and Brownie (Glaucoma), Other pets are - I first saw Brownie,a beautiful buff cocker spaniel, sitting on the center stripe of a 55mph highway in rural Arkansas. Upon passing her, I did a U-turn, pulled to the side of the road, and she jumped in my car. One of her eyes looked terribly infected & we went to the vet right away. Brownie had no vision in that eye due to glaucoma. The eye was removed and the vet sewed it shut with a prosthetic sphere inside. Within 2 weeks of surgery, the other eye developed glaucoma and one week of drug therapy had no significant effect. The remaining eye was removed, & we are just starting to work out a routine as my house & yard are "strange" surroundings Browmie must learn. (11-19-01), White Hall

Mary O'Brien and Jake (Cataracts, retinal degeneration), Other pets are Annie - Jake, 2 years old, San Francisco
Jake is brave little guy who is a master of obstacles. He seems to have endless energy and optimism when confronting problems. He's cautious when I first show him how to do things, but once he learns them, he won't ever ask for help again. He's very aware and very bright - probably because he has to be in order to take in what's going on around him. He competes with our other dog Annie, a much larger dog, but is learning that she can help him if he's willing to follow her and accept his "Beta" status. He loves to go on long hikes and is friendly with new people & dogs. The best thing about Jake, though, is that he's so very loyal to me and seems so appreciative of the training I give him (unlike our seeing dog, who doesn't particularly care to learn new things but prefers to run wild). He trusts me completely and there's something so very gratifying in earning that trust. , San Francisco
Denise and Brandy (SARDS), Other pets are - Diagnosed 6/02. Brandy is 10 years old and we are learning new ways to get around day by day.

Gilda Mangold and Zook Skywalker (SARDS), Other pets are Maxwell Smart - Zook (black dachshund, age 8) has been totally blind since March 2001. He has a very gentle, easy-going and playful disposition, which was a big help in his adjustment period into the 'darkness'. Sighted Max (red dachshund, age 2) is more rambunctious and assertive in personality. He both supports and takes care of Zook at times, even though it's been a rough change for Max in losing his hearty, 'roll-around-with-me' playmate. They have adjusted very well to this new life, and have taught me so much -- especially about seeing not with our eyes, but with our soul., Cupertino

Rita Titus-Bonas and Joe Cocker Bonas (Gluacoma), Other pets are Shilo and Sophie,
Message: Joe Cocker was a beautiful English Cocker with a very sweet personality. He was
12 years old when he went to Rainbow Bridge. Of the 12 years his last 5 years were spent
completely blind after numerous surgeries and countless trips to his wonderful vet.
Initially Joe had a slow adjustment. Soon he knew his way around the house, up and down
stairs and he was able to make his way up and down to our bed via a step stool every nite
. He still enjoyed his evening walks with all of us as well as his rides in the car. He is
truly missed each and every day, however, we know he is waiting for us at Rainbow Bridge.
Also a very special thank you to everyone at the Blinddog Website. Many hours have been
spent reading and sometimes replying, but having everyone out there certainly made our
days easier! Thank you, Rita Titus-Bonas , Carlsbad

It has been about 30 days. E.J. is completely back to normal, except he is blind. The Vet said it is from the lack of oxygen to his brain. She is an absolute doll! Here is a bit about her from the petfinder.com write up:
Notes: 10 yr old black & rust female, spayed, docked tail and cropped ears. Miss Jazz has possibly had one of the most difficult lives I've ran across so far. She was used in a puppymill until recently to crank out puppies for someone; the sad part is that Jazz has bilateral cataracts and is totally blind and has been for some time now. When she was spayed recently, the vet found two mammary tumors and cancer in her uterus. Luckily, we caught it in time to prevent it from spreading any farther in her body. At first, I thought she was crippled with arthritis, because she didn't get around very well most days without medication, but since her surgery she is learning to climb up on the sofa by herself. She has an awful scar on her hip that will always be a mystery, but she doesn't let any of these things stop her. She finds her way around the house, including to all the heating vents, and has even figured out how to get up onto my waterbed without human intervention. She has an indomitable spirit and an unstoppable wiggle in her waggle. She deserves nothing but the best for the rest of her life, can you provide that???
....

Well, I am the proud companion of a blind three legged white Addison German
Shepherd who has survived Heartworm.....
WOW huh!
Zorro has Progressive Retinal Degeneration. It is something that he was born
with and also Optical Degeneration which could have been caused by a virus
when he was young, all the trauma and all the other issues he had that went
untreated. In my heart, I am devastated! Angry, sad, mad, confused, disappointed. I
want
to scream at "somebody" for doing this to him. I think he is only 2 1/2
years
old and he has been through neglect abuse, illness, limb removal, caged for
months, I just want to scream to somebody, "ENOUGH". When he has his
precious
rubber chicken in his mouth and he looks at me with that 'please play with
me
mommy' look, but he is looking 2 feet to my left or right with that Germ.
Shep.
head tilt, the tears just fill in my eyes, and I swear I can literally feel
my heart breaking. I have had this pressure or pain in my chest since
yesterday
morning. BUT.......Yes the big BUT....
He can still somewhat see shadows at this point. It might stay that way or
he
might go completely blind. Being blind for Zorro is not life threatening, he
will adjust, he gets around my house really well. He amazes me....... He
gives
me the strength to realize what he needs most right now is for his mommy to
be positive, patient, loving (I know, not babying him!) and just work with
him
and make the needed adjustments to make his life as fun and fulfilled as my
bank account and my heart possibly can! I did stop on the way home from the
vet
at the pet store. $150.00 worth of new 'interactive toys" and treats! He is
one damn happy dog. He just blows my mind!
I am sure in the next week I will take a ride all by myself and have that
much needed scream and cry for myself, but that is just what it will be, for
myself!!! Now I have beautiful puppy who is
"looking" towards me and wants to play... Just can't ignore that precious
face!

Marie and Skinner (Unknown), Other pets are Fox, Missy - We adopted Skinner from the Tompkins County (Ithaca) SPCA in August 2002. He was turned in to them as a stray (in July 2002), so we have no history on him. Estimates on his age at the time we adopted him ran between 5 and 9 years old, but no one knows for sure. He is nearly 100% blind, but does react to some light stimuli.
I often wonder about how/why he came to be separated from his owners.
My husband would probably shoot me if he knew I was making this post, since there's NO WAY he will allow himself to separated from Skinner. However, I would not mind giving his prior owners updates/pictures/reassurance that he's happy (I lost a cat once and know how it feels not knowing).

C Robertson and Orson (PRA or PRD -- medical mystery), Other pets are Emily and Jasper, the sister-cats - First noticed dilated pupils after an eye infection in spring 2000, when Orson was just over 1 year old. Dilation did not go away after several treatments, and vet could not see retina because of hyperreflective lenses. An ERG (electro-retinograpy) test at Cornell was supposed to indicate exactly what Orson could see. The ERG indicated no response whatsoever from his retinas, meaning he's supposedly 100% blind. But he clearly has some amount of sight, however small. He was labeled a medical mystery by the opthalmologist, but the cause is likely PRA and/or PRD. Probably existed before the eye infection., Ithaca
Sarah Pratt and Copper, a 6 y.o. Cocker Spaniel (Glaucoma), Other pets are 2 cats, Rain and Jack - Copper developed Glaucoma in the right eye in early May 2001. Medications could not reduce pressure so he underwent a laser surgery that failed. Next day he had surgery for implantation of prosthetic eye. He was 100% better and back to normal until 9/12/01, when he developed Glaucoma in his left eye. So far, medications are not really controlling the pressure well, and Copper is scheduled to have another prosthetic eye implantation 11/5/01. Cornell said they would move up the surgery date if Copper started to show signs of pain. Right now he appears to be pain free despite the high pressures. He is trying like crazy to adjust to his loss of vision, and my hope is he will succeed with a little help. Copper actually lives in Watertown, NY with my grandfather, who decided he didn't want to give Copper back to me once I graduated from college. That's my Copper, works his way into your heart and doesn't ever let go! :) Hopefully he will be as much as a fighter overcoming this challenge as he was winning over my grandfather! I would welcome any and all comments/suggestions to help Copper, my grandfather and I adjust., Marcellus

Norma and Curly Sue (Glaucoma-first sign: uncertain when passing though doorways), Other pets are - Curly Sue is a happy, well-adjusted mixed-breed dog who has never felt sorry for herself since she's gone blind. She's black and white and curly all over.
She has memorized our house (darn those clothes baskets that appear suddenly.) She goes outside by herself, knows our yard, barn, boundaries, and does well--she has a fantastic nose that helps her track back. She has been known to take off after a herd of deer at Grandma's house. On a leash, she just steps out with no fear--it's a huge responsibility to remember to tell her "up," "down," "careful," and to watch for obstacles.
Our son brought home a Bassett puppy in summer of 2003. Susie (13) was not thrilled at first but they are now buddies. They have big "dog fights" with lots of tail wagging and they even play tug-o-war. Pokey has really enlivened Susie, who sometimes would lick her paws obsessively in the past. He's even learned a lot about how to behave from her. We have a very noisy houehold sometimes! , Loudonville

Kim Whiteside and Scruffy (Corneal Degeneration due to Diabetes), Other pets are Chiquita, Bear, Prince, and Shadow the Cat - I've had Scruffy (part chihuahua and terrier with the heart of a lion, or should I say timber wolf) for about 7 years now and he is my little trooper. He came from the animal shelter because his previous owners wanted to put him down because he had worms. Instead of putting him down the vet kept (sssh... don't tell) and my sister and mother adopted him for me. A couple of years later he came down with a severe case of bacterial colitis which he recovered from, thank goodness. It did, we think, possibly do something to his pancreas because a few months later he had lost half his body weight and was diagnosed with exocrine pancreatic insufficiency. That treated, he improved greatly and gained some weight back. A year later, though, the rest of his pancreas quit functioning as well as he is now an insulin dependent diabetic. Now, just recently, he was attacked by another dog who injured one of his eyes. Although it has "healed" he has lost sight in it. He was coping quite well with only one functioning eye, but now we have discovered an ulcer on the other eye and more loss of vision. The vet says it looks like he has corneal degeneration and sclerosis, which result in blindness. Yesterday he could see, today he cannot. We think he might be able to see shadows, but I have to help him find his food and treats. Your website has really helped. I'm trying to skip straight to tip #9. Thank you. , Adair

(There is a possibility that she may also be mostly deaf) I have been working with her but because she is so young and has the disability I am searching for ways to help us both. Under the circumstances I know frustration can be a major factor in the learning process for her and I both. But I know we both have strong spirits and (on my part) a ton of patience., Harrisburg

She said she had a champion quality 6 week old redbone coonhound puppy that the breeder had brought in to be euthanized. She said she could not do it. The puppy was friendly, playful and got around by putting her head against the back legs of other dogs. We took her to UT Vet. College and they said the blindness was genetic and irreparable. She has sanctuary for life with us and can manuever our shelter in a full run. We have to tell people she is blind. However if we put in a new shrub she will dig it up or if a wheelbarrow gets left out she stands and barks, (after she runs into it,) till somebody puts it up. She is the sweetest dog on earth, and we love her. Our shelter is the only safe haven program for the animal victims of domestic violence in our state. He ended up at Spindletop Am Staff & Pit Bull Rescue/Refuge in Houston Tx. I had adopted a wonderful rescue pit bully girl, Morgan, from Spindletop 4yrs ago, and had just lost my sweet 9yr old border collie mix (rescue)and wanted another pit bully dog for companionship for Morgan. Wasn't sure if I wanted to take a blind dog, but now I KNOW I've done the right thing for all of us. He is wonderful !! He is friendly, sweet, affectionate, funny, playful and meets life with great courage. He goes wherever I take him with no complaint and plays with Morgan both in the house and out in the fenced yard. I am so much in love with Stevie and know he is meant for me and my animal family. I look forward to many years of learning how to live with a blind dog who is sooooo special !!

angela and RUSTY (DRY EYE/CATARACTS), Other pets are EBONY - I have had rusty with me for 15 years, when I married we got ebony. When I was told Rusty would be blind I could'nt even pay the vet bill I cried so much....my mum had taken him outside after consultation, to do the usual...and I had to go out with my card and give her the pin to pay, I thought I was ok, and the vet nurse said happily, How is Rusty.....and the realisation came when I said, He..s...going tooo be bli..(sob) bli(sob) blind....it was so hard....my baby...I had hand fed him from just born...his mother was my sisters dog and she was not a good mum...so I took over...4 hourly feeds ect...I have had him longer than I have my husband.....fastrack to twelve months after his op with implant and he is fine.....bumps into things now and then....but stil gets around ok......has his stuffed tasmanian devil....(toy) and rolls around on that......Ebony keeps any eye out for him and just gets out of his way when he's rolling around...and nearly going to roll on her....he was here first and I still treat him as number one dog....one thing i did when he went blind was buy some mats which he can feel when he steps on them and put his water on one and one at the doggy door, so he knows...1. where the water is and 2. how to get out for toiletries.....and i feed him in the same spot everynight.....another thing changed was where he sleeps...he used to sleep with us.....i have a very high bed...so this took a little time but he now sleeps...where ever he wants in the rest of the house....with doggy door open at all times.....too dangerous to have him in bed and worried about him falling off or jumping during the night.....did'nt take long and he is quite happy.....(used to bark at the door) so all is well...took about 6 months...oh and he's deaf to.......when something seems so unbearable your resilient pet can remind you how to adjust...to life's little turns., REGENTS PARK BRISBANE

Anca and Dagmar (Congenital Cataracts), Other pets are - Dagmar is a Miniature Schnauzer who has been diagnosed with congenital cataracts last year when she was 3 years old. We determined that she has not lost all her vision, can still see very close in front of her, but her long range vision is gone. We contemplated surgery when we first found out that she was going blind, but the risks associated with it (surgery) were not worth it. She thinks everything is normal and so behaves like any other dog, she is definitely not handicapped. Dagmar has a mindmap of our apartment and park and has no problems navigating around. I constantly talk to her when we're outside and she's off the lead, so she knows where I am at all times - another good idea is to have a little bell on the person so the dog knows where you are. Dagmar is the best dog we've ever had and I would not change a thing. Although I researched illnesses and breeders before we got her, this happened anyway, but knowing all that has happened I would still choose Dagmar to be our dog., Ottawa, Canada, Ottawa, Canada

He suddenly became blind(can still see light and shadows)over Christmas 2000, and since has been diagnosed with SARDS. Every day he amazes me with his willing attitude and good nature. Blindness had truly not changed his outlook on life. He continues to teach me daily about overcoming obstacles, and I just pray that he is there to teach me for many years to come. Dianna Oliver and Minnie (Mouse) (from birth as she is a full -size female collie), Other pets are Lady and Tramp -11 year old brother and sister cats - I was given Minnie as a birthday gift from my sister who works at our local humane society.
I was looking for a dog and wanted a large dog to walk with me to help me bring my blood pressure to normal levels. Also I became an empty nester over the summer and felt I needed someone to meet me at the door at the end of my day. Lady and Tramp were really not co-operating on this train of thought!
I fell in love with Minnie on our first introduction at the humane society. My sister explained that she needed a "seeing eye person" and I wanted it to be me! I foster cared for her about a week and then I adopted her! What a beautiful gift......My Minnie!
She is 5 to 7 years old and totally blind. She was well trained by her previous family. She knows all her commands and loves to go for walks!
Coming home each day....my Minnie is waiting to greet me and ready for a walk. She is so loveable and happy! What a lovely dog!

Cherryl Pettitt and Sadie (Late onset PRA), Other pets are Sophie & Susie - Will sort out some piccies when we can get everyone to sit still !
All the girls are female, neuter toy poodles. Susie is the old lady, 03/12/86, Sophie 15/09/91 and Sadie-Babie 09/09/94. Susie & Sophie are both rescues. Sophie through poodle rescue (single mother, four children couldn't cope with Sophie as well), and is a rare white chocolate poodle (well white with chocolate points). She had her off-side luxating patella corrected in February, resulting in her mum have two days off from work on "Pup-ternity". Susie has been with us for four years. Her old mum went to a hospice. Susie thinks she is about six months old, and tears about the house like the puppy thing she is. Sadie is the acknowledged beauty of the family. She is her father's favourite, and is a very picky eater (so much so that when her dad was in hospital, mum had to feed her on Big Macs). She was orginally diganosed in January with junvenille catracts, went for a second opionion (long story but don't like a vet who wants to operate on any dog who can't see a computer screen), Mark our old vet said PRA, nothing that can be done. After embrassing myself by crying in the middle of a market town on market day (locals thought it was the price of potatoes!), we all went through the grieving process, disbelif, throwing money at it, worrying about her quality of life. Sadie, like the superstar she is, still has a little limited sight, has had about ten minutes of moping, and is now coping as well as ever. The hard part is trying not to baby her when she walks into things, recently she bounced off some park railings. The one thing we has made it all easier is knowing we are not alone (corny by true). Reading everyone else's experience and having their support has made us realise that she, and all the other blind, partiail-sighted dogs and their owners aren't different, but special. So thanks to all the other "speicals" out there., Banbury, Oxfordshire

Bev Doyle and Tetley, We think it was "Blue Eye" - as the result of an
infection, Rescue dogs called Kizzie, Mokka, Sprout, Radar, Dillan & Buddy (and then
there's the 16 rescue cats), Tetley is not actually visually impaired now. He was
diagnosed (as a very young pup) with inoperable cataracts, but as the weeks went by, it
became apparent that this was a mis-diagnosis. It seems that Tetley and his littermates
had something known as Blue Eye which can look like a cataract, but is actually brought
about by an infection.
