Protective Headgear for Blind Dogs with Hearing Loss

Postby jlunardo on Thu Dec 15, 2005 12:09 am

My 14 year old dog is Blind and now losing her Hearing. She is getting disoriented and bumps her head constantly. Does anyone know of someone who sells protective headgear for dogs in this situation?

I think you would be more concerned about her bumping her eyes or ears or the tip of her nose. The actual head is quite hard and can withstand lots of bumps.
I'm not sure where you can get this protective gear though - definitely talk to your vet or local pet store. They should know of someone who can help you out.
Good luck,

They do sell "dog helmets" at http://www.zoomergear.com/ if this is the type of thing you are thinking of?

Another idea... there is also a "hoop harness" that can be made (designed by Dave, the owner of this board) with instructions for making the hoop at: http://www.blindpets.com/harness/index.htm

Hope this helps! :D

Doggles

For the person who is looking for protective gear: doggles are almost like sunglasses for dogs. They have a strap that goes under their chin and around the back of the head and are like goggles. I got them for my blind Maltese. She has prosthetic eyes and I sometimes worry when she is around my parents' larger dog. She doesn't love to wear them but I am working on it.

Yes, the Doggles are great to have for eye protection
I got a pair for our blind girl a few months ago, and she would run to hide in her crate when she knew I had them out. Holly (seeing eye sis) "wanted" to put them on, but were too big for her, so ended up getting a pair to fit Holly. As long as Holly has to wear them too, Lucy will let me put hers on (they are SO much like human sisters!
I've just been putting them on for short periods (treat when they put them on, treat when they take them off) several times each week, and they don't seem to mind having them on anymore. For those that haven't seen the Doggles, I have a picture up of Lucy & Holly in their Doggles at: http://www.blinddogs.net/doggle_girls.jpg

The Doggles company web site is: http://www.doggles.com
