I am the owner of a 7 year old Golden Lab and in the last 7 months have been on a very sharp learning curve about canine diabetes.
In December 2009 we found out that Jaz was not a guzzle guts with her water but she had diabetes. My first reaction was why her?
Then the joys of syringes and insulin storage and diets and routines. I thought my vet was never going to shut up! On that first day when I stabbed an orange I thought I CAN'T DO THIS TO JAZ. But you know what, 7 months on I can give her a jab and not even wake her up.
It's been a rough 7 months, getting used to the illness, then she got pyometra and was hospitalised. At least we got the spaying over with! Now we are dealing with the fact that her sight is going.
I've been looking at toys with bells, balls that giggle. It's amazing what's out there.
One thing I am finding is that after everything else this year I'm taking the blindness in my stride.
And Jaz? As long as she's got her food and a cuddle when she feels like it she's happy. Simple things!
