My Newly Diagnosed Diabetic Dog

Postby freeway on Mon Jun 26, 2006 10:43 pm

New to your group and thought someone may have some advice, or share some information on treaating their dog. My beloved Freeway, a Plotthound, nine years old was diagnosed with diabetes on Saturday. His sugar level was at 686. The vet started him on two 30 unit imjections of NPH human insulin. I have not seen much of a change. Still not eating, and drinking tremendous amounts of water. The vet also put him on 3 dosages a day of 500 mg of Keflex, an antibiotic. Any advice or encouragement?

Thanks,
Fran

Encouragement

Howdy Freeway's human

I'm sure you must be going through a period of shock and adjustment right now, but take heart! There is plenty of hope and the treatments available are good.

There is a lot you didn't mention such as Freeway's age, breed, etc. (makes a difference sometimes), but right now your concerns are about regulating the diabetes.

As mentioned in a previous post , here are some excellent resources you should know about:

I'm assuming that the hair loss/weight loss may also be connected to her being diabetic. I'm including some links to different sites with info that might be helpful:
http://www.caninediabetes.org/
http://www.petdiabetes.org/
http://www.blinddog.info/diabetes.htm
http://www.vetinfo4dogs.com/ddiabt.html

Keep chatting and asking questions!!!!
I really does help with the success of dealing with this illness.

All the best

Hi Fran and Freeway.... welcome to the board!

I don't have any personal experience with diabetes, but in addition to the resource links to web sites on diabetes, there are also some email support groups for diabetic dogs on yahoogroups.com.

These are a few of them:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/CanineCus ... mmuneCare/
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/diabetes_insipidus_dogs/
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/DiabeticDogs/

I hope this additional information might be helpful... and please keep us posted on how Freeway is doing!
